Whenever I look up in the sky and see a big storm cloud
I head out to a little ditch that runs behind my house
Now normally it’s just as dry as a bone
But on really rainy days the water really starts to flow

No more than a trickle, but just for fun
I named it Rabbit Run

When Rabbit Run is flowing I like to head out back and play
I toss in leaves and twigs and little paper boats and watch them float away
Sometimes I wonder if I could jump right into Rabbit Run
Would it carry me downstream to see everyone?

I wonder if some rainy day my Mom would be surprised
To look across our yard and see me floating by… my my


Run, run, rabbit run
Wherever you are going
Gather me up with the rain
And send me on down the stream
Take me with you when you run
Run, run, Rabbit Run


I reckon if I could ride Rabbit Run down a ways
It’d hand me off to a little stream they call Rooster’s Race
Now Rooster’s Race that’d take me clear across the town
That stream runs right by my friend Ruby’s house!

I wonder if ‘round ‘bout dinner time
She’d look out of her window and see me floating by… my, my

Run, run, rabbit run
Wherever you are going
Gather me up with the rain
And send me on down the stream

I suppose if I could stick with Rooster’s Race a while
It’d roll me into the Rhubarb River out in the countryside
Now the Rhubarb River I could take that pretty far
That river runs right through my Grandparents farm

I wonder if in the morning they would walk outside
Look across a field and see me floating by… my my

Now the Rhubarb River would take me all the way down to the coast
And eventually it’d roll me right out into the ocean
The ocean would take me anyplace in the world I’d wanna go
The ocean goes right past folks I don’t even know

I wonder if some kids like me out on some distant island
Would look out from her shore and see me floating by… my my

The more I think about it, the more that I can see
Turns out the whole world lives just downstream from me
That’s  a big responsibility living upstream from everyone
I gotta be careful what I drop into Rabbit Run
Then again, no matter who you are or wherever you might be
If you’re down on your luck and need a buck or two from me

I’ll save my pennies up for a rainy day
Drop them into Rabbit Run and send them your way… and I’ll say
