Local Colorado Springs singer-songwriter Steve Weeks has recorded four award-winning albums for children that have garnered Parents' Choice Awards and have had regular airplay on XM Satellite radio.
For most of his career he's gotten kids up and dancing to his lively, humorous songs, but his latest collection of 13 tunes are acoustic lullabies meant more for bedtime.
Accompanied by his acoustic guitar, ukulele, or piano, Steve sings clearly and gently on 13 tracks in this delightful collection of original tunes he's written over the past ten years.
There are several gems in this collection.
"Yellow Jacket" is a musing on things in life that come back, like buzzing insects after your lemonade, a yo-yo, or a yodel tossed to the wind.
But its deeper meaning is a hope that your children come back to you after they explore the world.
"Dog Beach" is written from the first "person" perspective of a dog set loose to enjoy a California beach.
"Turn Out the Lights" speaks of things that are eternal - the dreams in the head of child, the light inside that child, and the love a parent has for the child.
The lyrics of "Turn Out the Lights" are absolutely beautiful.
It's the kind of song a parent might choke up singing to their own child.
There are also three lovely instrumentals titled "Rain," "Creek," and "Ocean" that combine his gentle acoustic playing with sounds from nature.
Once I Lived Upon the Sea includes lyrics to all the songs as well as Steve's explanation and inspirations for each tune.
Everything about the packaging and design of Steve's latest CD (as well as his cute website) is top notch.
I highly recommend this CD for parents, grandparents, kids, or anyone who wants to discover a true talent right here in our backyard.
